This is not an exaggeration: The three-week silent retreat at Am Kolel last year was among the absolutely most amazing experiences of my life. This inner journey was far more life-changing than experiencing the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, the Louvre, and even Jerusalem. Many of my friends know me as a chatterbox of sorts and couldn't believe I signed up for such a thing. Not for a single moment did I regret participating or wish the retreat was over already. Rabbi Jeff and his team are wonderful teachers and retreat managers, the grounds are lovely, and the food topnotch at "normal" consciousness, let alone as one's senses become more and more heightened. The sitting periods are not too long and nicely varied with walking meditation, chanting, instructions, yoga, eating, and rest periods. And it wasn't just incredible while it lasted. The heightened state of awareness stayed with me for a few weeks and even now, ten months later, I still experience life more deeply and clearly than I did before the retreat. Ask me what I feel when I think of my second three-week silent Jewish meditation retreat coming up: joyful anticipation, excitement, and gratitude.
