A Six-Night Jewish Mindfulness Meditation Retreat

Sponsored by The Awakened Heart Project
and The Hannaton Education Center

Register online.

Join us for an opportunity to practice a path, which helps to cultivate an open heart, leads to clarity and insight and inspires us to deeply participate in the injunction to love our neighbors as we love ourselves.

One of the principle obstacles to that love is a failing to deeply look into our own human nature. We frequently live in reactive mode deeply conditioned to certain beliefs and opinions. This can result in a contraction of the heart, defensiveness and a preoccupation with our smallest selfish needs, which may lead us to act unwisely and unkindly to those around us. But it is possible to develop mindful awareness, an increasing clarity and inner freedom that allows us to see the Divine Presence that manifests as the interconnected nature of all things and that opens the heart of compassion. This weeklong meditation retreat will give you the tools and the time to delve inward and cultivate these qualities.

Using the vehicle of silence, mindfulness and a variety of Jewish meditation approaches this retreat will help you to look deeply into life. The retreat also includes daily periods of prayer, chant and meditative movement. Prayer sessions will be jointly led by the teaching staff. The form of prayer consists of chanting excerpts from the liturgy interspersed with silence. Those who follow traditional rules for davvening can pray separately to fulfill their obligations.

Daily instruction in meditation will help guide both beginning and advanced practitioners into the sacred space of the retreat process. Throughout the retreat we will maintain social silence. There will also be times for questions and answers, as well as small group and private interviews with the instructors. The week will include a deep celebration of Shabbat, followed by a chance to hear of each other’s experience as the retreat comes to a close.

The costs of the retreat include room and board and an administrative fee to cover other retreat costs. The teachings are offered freely and the teaching staff is not paid. Participants will be asked to make a voluntary contribution to support the teachers. Some financial aid is available.

Requests for financial aid should be made to Rabbi Roth at (jeff@awakenedheartproject.org.) jeff (at) awakenedheartproject (dot) org

Join Rabbi Jeff Roth for a four night Jewish meditation retreat in Asheville. There are many benefits to an extended period of retreat practice, which makes this opportunity a unique one in the Jewish World. Rabbi Jeff Roth will be offering the opportunity to experience practices which thousands of people have found transformative and life enhancing. Learn practices that result in greater clarity and wisdom, open the heart of compassion and lead to greater happiness.

Participants will enhance their skills in a range of meditative techniques. These include concentration techniques, contemplative prayer chants, mindfulness meditation, the path of blessing, walking and eating meditation and practices that cultivate joy.

Register Now.

This retreat is designed to show experientially how a regular Jewish meditation practice can help cultivate awareness in all aspects of daily life. The program will present a model for using the Sabbath as a weekly anchor for formal practice that reminds us of the possibility of bringing our awareness to a meeting of the Divine Presence in every moment.

Structure of the Retreat

The retreat is conducted in social silence which means refraining from conversation with other participants at all times. There will be group times for questions and answers. Rabbi Roth will provide instructions for all practices as well as present relevant didactic material. The silence of these retreats allows for a settling of the mind as well as an in depth look at ones experience of life in each moment. In meeting the present moment, the opportunity to meet the Divine Presence manifests.

Registration Information

Fees for the retreat cover room and board only. The teachings are offered freely. We will welcome donations to support the teacher and the administrative costs of this website and the Awakened Heart Project. We hope you will support this model of charging only the actual costs to participants, as this allows us to offer these retreats regardless of ability to pay the full cost.

Register Now.

Room and Board Costs

The cost for the four nights: $350 (quad occupancy – 12 meals) $400 (double occupancy – 12 meals) $550 (single – 12 meals) $240 (tent or commuter – 12 meals)

Financial support is available through The Awakened Heart Project. Contact Jeff (at) awakenedheartproject (dot) org with requests for aid or with other questions.

The retreat will be held at the Prama Institute, 310 Panhandle Road, Marshall, NC 28753 (http://www.pramainstitute.org). All meals are vegetarian. Space limited to 24 people.

“This is not an exaggeration: The three-week silent retreat at Am Kolel last year was among the absolutely most amazing experiences of my life. This inner journey was far more life-changing than experiencing the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, the Louvre, and even Jerusalem. Many of my friends know me as a chatterbox of sorts and couldn’t believe I signed up for such a thing. Not for a single moment did I regret participating or wish the retreat was over already. Rabbi Jeff and his team are wonderful teachers and retreat managers, the grounds are lovely, and the food topnotch at “normal” consciousness, let alone as one’s senses become more and more heightened. The sitting periods are not too long and nicely varied with walking meditation, chanting, instructions, yoga, eating, and rest periods. And it wasn’t just incredible while it lasted. The heightened state of awareness stayed with me for a few weeks and even now, ten months later, I still experience life more deeply and clearly than I did before the retreat. Ask me what I feel when I think of my second three-week silent Jewish meditation retreat coming up: joyful anticipation, excitement, and gratitude.”
- Emunah

We are very excited to be holding a three week meditation retreat. There are many benefits to an extended period of retreat practice, which makes this opportunity a unique one in the Jewish World. The retreat will be in silence comparable to other Jewish silent retreats. Most mornings, there will be davenning using chanting, and some mornings will be used for solo davenning. There will be instructions given most days. There will be daily lectures. All participants will have private interviews with the teaching staff – two or three times per week – with other contacts as needed to support your practice.

Our hope is that a significant number of people will want to sit for all 3 weeks. Preference will be given to those interested in sitting the entire period – shorter periods will be considered only if space permits. The retreat will be limited to 25 people.

Facilitator of the Retreat:

Rabbi Jeff Roth will be the primary facilitator of the whole period. Other teachers may join for shorter periods. The final staffing pattern will depend on the number of participants. There will be a sliding scale of prices. There are limited options for single and double rooms, and requests for those rooms will be on a first come, first served basis. Teachers at the retreat will be offering their time freely. Donations to support their work will be discussed at the end of the retreat.

Room and Board Costs:

Estimated cost for the three weeks: $1100 (quad occupancy) $1600 (double occupancy) $2100 (single).

Fees for the retreat cover room and board and administrative costs only. The teachings are offered freely. Donations will be requested to support the teacher and this model of charging only the actual costs to participants.

A Six-Day Jewish Meditation Retreat
Sponsored by the Awakened Heart Project

The end of summer is a wonderful time to deeply explore the nature of life and the precious gift it is to be here. But often times, this is not our primary experience from day to day. It is easy to get caught up in the challenges that naturally accompany each of our lives. Spending six days in contemplative practice is a uniquely wonderful way to gain balance in our lives and cultivate a grateful heart, which can see the truth of our lives more clearly. This practice opens the heart to wisdom and compassion propelling us to a life of loving-kindness. This six day meditation retreat will give you the tools and the time to delve inward and cultivate these qualities.

Using the vehicle of silence and a variety of Jewish meditation approaches this retreat will help you to look deeply into your own life. The retreat includes daily periods of prayer, chant and meditative movement. Daily instruction in meditation will help guide both beginning and advanced practitioners into the sacred space of the retreat process. Throughout the retreat we will maintain social silence. There will also be times for questions and answers as well as small group and private interviews with the instructors. The week will culminate in a deep celebration of Shabbat followed by the chance to hear of each other’s learning as the retreat comes to a close.

This retreat is SOLD OUT.

The costs of the retreat include room and board and an administrative fee to cover the other retreat costs. The teachings are presented without fees included to support the teaching staff. Participants will be asked to make a voluntary contribution to support the teachers. Some financial aid is available. Requests for financial aid should be made to Rabbi Roth at (jeff@awakenedheartproject.org) jeff (at) awakenedheartproject (dot) org.

Sponsored by the Awakened Heart Project

Join Rabbi Jeff Roth for this unique retreat. We will open the retreat with Shabbat, creating connection with the Divine Presence and a personal spaciousness that opens the heart of compassion. We will then use this experience as the anchor for a daily practice that awakens us to an awareness of the Divine Presence in every moment. Our final weekend will culminate in a deep and rich Shabbat.

Shabbat practice provides an excellent opportunity to benefit from the value of meditation. The Shabbat portions of the retreat will empower you with practices that can be a model for Shabbat throughout the year. These are practices that you can use in the course of daily life as well. These practices can enhance your relationships with family, colleagues as well as all the communities of your life. At the core is the enhancement of the sense of the Divine Presence that pervades all of being.
