Join Rabbis Joanna Katz and Jeff Roth for a five-night Jewish meditation retreat in Asheville. There are many benefits to an extended period of retreat practice, which include cultivating a deep wisdom of the nature of the human mind and the opening of the heart to love of self and others. The retreat offers the opportunity to experience practices which thousands of people have found transformative and life enhancing.

Register Now.

Participants will enhance their skills in a range of meditative techniques. These include concentration techniques, contemplative prayer chants, mindfulness meditation, the path of blessing, walking and eating meditation and practices that cultivate joy.

This retreat is designed to show experientially how a regular Jewish meditation practice can help cultivate awareness in all aspects of daily life. The program will present a model for using the Sabbath as a weekly anchor for formal practice that reminds us of the possibility of bringing our awareness to a meeting of the Divine Presence in every moment.

Structure of the Retreat

The retreat is conducted in social silence which means refraining from conversation with other participants at all times. There will be group times for questions and answers. Rabbi Roth will provide instructions for all practices as well as present relevant didactic material. The silence of these retreats allows for a settling of the mind as well as an in depth look at ones experience of life in each moment. In meeting the present moment, the opportunity to meet the Divine Presence manifests.

Registration Information

Fees for the retreat cover room and board only.

The teachings are offered freely. We will welcome donations to support the teacher and the administrative costs of this website and the Awakened Heart Project. We hope you will support this model of charging only the actual costs to participants, as this allows us to offer these retreats regardless of ability to pay the full cost.

Financial support is available through The Awakened Heart Project.

A Six-Day Jewish Meditation Retreat
Sponsored by The Awakened Heart Project

The end of summer is a wonderful time to deeply explore the nature of life and the precious gift it is to be here. But often times, this is not our primary experience from day to day. It is easy to get caught up in the challenges that naturally accompany each of our lives.

Spending six days in contemplative practice is a uniquely wonderful way to gain balance in our lives and cultivate a grateful heart, which can see the truth of our lives more clearly. This practice opens the heart to wisdom and compassion propelling us to a life of loving-kindness. This six-day meditation retreat will give you the tools and the time to delve inward and cultivate these qualities.

Using the vehicle of silence and a variety of Jewish meditation approaches this retreat will help you to look deeply into your own life. The retreat includes daily periods of prayer, chant and meditative movement.

There will also be times for questions and answers as well as small group and private interviews with the instructors.

The week will culminate in a deep celebration of Shabbat followed by the chance to hear of each other’s learning as the retreat comes to a close.

A Three-Night Jewish Meditation Retreat

Sponsored by The Awakened Heart Project, Beit Ayin and The Idra

As we move from Passover to Shavuot we will make the connection between practices that liberate the heart and mind with recognition of the Oneness of Being that guides our efforts during this three-night meditation retreat.

Using the vehicle of silence and a variety of Jewish meditation approaches this retreat will invite you to look deeply into your own life, as you cultivate greater wisdom, joy and compassion. The deep work allows each of us to see more clearly how we become overwhelmed and shut down, hurting ourselves and those around us in the process.

The clarity possible through these practices allows us to experience the movement from “small mind,” the narrow place of “mochin de’katnut,” into an expanded perception of the Divine presence that pervades all of life–what Hassidism calls “devekut.”

The retreat includes daily periods of prayer, chant and meditative movement. Daily instruction in meditation will help guide both beginning and advanced practitioners into the sacred space of the retreat process.

What does it mean to say You to God? Our relationship with God forms though listening without language, developing a loving relationship – not with it, which is the idea of God, but with You, the felt presence of God. This place where we address God as You includes the lover and the beloved, raising the question of dualism – what is the me; what is the other. This is the relational aspect of the divine. This is the place where we are known and loved.

A Six-Night Jewish Mindfulness Meditation Retreat

Sponsored by The Awakened Heart Project
and The Hannaton Education Center

Register online.

Join us for an opportunity to practice a path, which helps to cultivate an open heart, leads to clarity and insight and inspires us to deeply participate in the injunction to love our neighbors as we love ourselves.

One of the principle obstacles to that love is a failing to deeply look into our own human nature. We frequently live in reactive mode deeply conditioned to certain beliefs and opinions. This can result in a contraction of the heart, defensiveness and a preoccupation with our smallest selfish needs, which may lead us to act unwisely and unkindly to those around us. But it is possible to develop mindful awareness, an increasing clarity and inner freedom that allows us to see the Divine Presence that manifests as the interconnected nature of all things and that opens the heart of compassion. This weeklong meditation retreat will give you the tools and the time to delve inward and cultivate these qualities.

Using the vehicle of silence, mindfulness and a variety of Jewish meditation approaches this retreat will help you to look deeply into life. The retreat also includes daily periods of prayer, chant and meditative movement. Prayer sessions will be jointly led by the teaching staff. The form of prayer consists of chanting excerpts from the liturgy interspersed with silence. Those who follow traditional rules for davvening can pray separately to fulfill their obligations.

Daily instruction in meditation will help guide both beginning and advanced practitioners into the sacred space of the retreat process. Throughout the retreat we will maintain social silence. There will also be times for questions and answers, as well as small group and private interviews with the instructors. The week will include a deep celebration of Shabbat, followed by a chance to hear of each other’s experience as the retreat comes to a close.

The costs of the retreat include room and board and an administrative fee to cover other retreat costs. The teachings are offered freely and the teaching staff is not paid. Participants will be asked to make a voluntary contribution to support the teachers. Some financial aid is available.
